Because most states do not license sober living homes, the quality of two houses on the same street can differ enormously. The good news: a short phone call with direct questions reveals most of what you need to know. Here is what to ask.
Money questions
What is the monthly rent, and what does it include? Is there a deposit, and is it refundable? Are there program fees, testing fees, or move-in costs? What is the refund policy if I leave or am asked to leave mid-month? A quality home answers these in writing without hesitation.
Structure questions
What are the curfews and overnight policies? How often is drug and alcohol testing done, and how is it handled? Is there a minimum stay? Are meetings required, and which kind? Is there a house manager on site, and what is their role?
Safety and accountability questions
How does the home handle a relapse — immediate discharge, a structured response, or case-by-case? Is the home certified by a NARR affiliate or part of an established network? Can I visit before committing and meet current residents? What is the guest policy?
Trust your visit
Paperwork tells you half the story. When you visit, notice whether the house is clean, whether residents seem engaged, and whether the manager answers directly or deflects. A home that welcomes scrutiny is usually a home with nothing to hide.
