Sober Living in California
California has more recovery housing than any other state, and Los Angeles County alone is home to hundreds of sober living residences. Because the state does not license sober living directly, quality varies — which is exactly why certification, house rules, and direct conversations with each home matter. This hub collects every city we cover in California, explains how the state treats recovery housing, and links to individual home profiles with verified contact details.

How sober living is regulated in California
California does not license sober living homes the way it licenses treatment facilities. Homes that provide only housing and peer support are generally considered residential uses and are not overseen by the Department of Health Care Services. Voluntary certification exists through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP), a NARR affiliate, and through networks like the Sober Living Network. When a listing mentions a state license, it usually means an affiliated treatment program is licensed, not the housing itself. Ask any home about certification, house rules, refund policies, and how it handles relapses before moving in.
